    • Acrylic BlanksNo two of these Acrylic Blanks are exactly the same, from the swirling blue and white of Antarctica to the cough candy orange of Cafe Society. The blanks can be turned or carved and made into anything you want, whilst popular for pens the only limits are your imagination and their size!     • Lacquers and VarnishesWhilst the terms ‘lacquer’ and ‘varnish’ are often used interchangeably, there is a technical difference. Varnishes are made by dissolving a solid into a solvent, which after application forms a coating when the solvent evaporates. Lacquers use resins mixed with solvents which dry after application to form a film. LACQUERS Generally speaking, lacquers are hard wearing and quick drying, designed to give a tough, long lasting finish to any piece of timber they are applied to. We have two types of lacquer, water based and cellulose based, each with slightly different properties and characteristics. Our Melamine Lacquer is solvent based and therefore very quick drying, usually touch dry within thirty seconds. It then chemically cures to achieve maximum hardness. It’s ideal for smaller items, or with care and a little thinning can be used on larger areas too. Apply by cloth, brush or spray it also comes in an easy to use aerosol. Our Acrylic Lacquers come in two types. First is the ‘brushing’ version, which can be applied by cloth or spray too. A milky liquid when wet, it soon dries to a clear coating, touch dry in five minutes and hard dry in twenty. It’s ideal for large…
    • OilsOil finishes are sometimes described as just being slow-drying varnishes which is technically incorrect on many levels. Oils are usually based on slow drying resins, which means the oil has time to penetrate the timber before it dries. This in turn seals the timber, leaving a hard wearing coating that almost becomes part of the wood itself. Penetrating the timber helps the oil bind to the surface, and ensures a thin coat. Oils are also quite flexible so if the timber moves slightly (either whilst drying or if damaged) they won’t crack, thus making them chip resistant too. Being slow drying makes oils very easy to apply and also very forgiving; it’s difficult to go wrong with an oil finish (but not impossible so don’t see that as a challenge!) The choice of oils can be confusing, they all have different properties for drying, hardness and clarity… Tung Oil is a pure oil, with no solvents or driers. This makes it quite slow drying but perfect if you want a completely natural finish. It dries to a tough, hard-wearing finish. Finishing Oil contains tung oil to make it tough , but is modified to dry quicker, in about eight hours.…
    • Polish EnhancersOnce you’ve got your final coating on, hopefully you’ll be happy with the finish you’ve achieved. Smooth, even and just the right amount of shine. But what if you want to make that gloss really dazzling? Using one of our polish enhancers will improve your finish by smoothing them down at an ultra fine level, resulting in a brighter shine and a smoother surface.     • Preparation - ApplicationIt’s impossible to overstate the importance of preparation when it comes to getting a good finish. Ensuring that your timber is smooth, clean and dry is vital for achieving the best possible result. Using one of our abrasives will help you, whether you choose a cloth backed or loop backed version or our excellent Net Abrasive. Follow on with NyWeb for an exceptionally smooth finish, with the option of wet sanding as well on all of these. Clean off with Tack Cloth to remove any unwanted debris and you’re good to go. Choosing the right application method is important too. Safety Cloth is invaluable on the lathe and provides an even coating effortlessly. Foam Brushes are indispensable for applying acrylics but they work superbly with other finishes too. Traditional Stockinette is still useful for working on large areas and its fine texture ensures a smooth, even coating.     • Sanding SealersYou have to feel sorry for Sanding Sealers. Many people don’t fully understand when to use them, why to use them or even how to use them. And then when they do, they mis-use them, which is a shame as they perform an important role quickly, easily and efficiently. A Sanding Sealer does many things. It seals the open pores of the timber, meaning you use less of the top coat. And that’s not only good for your pocket; using less means a thinner film, which is less likely to get damaged. It also smooths out minor irregularities in the surface, to give a better foundation for finishing. And it binds together the loose, fibrous material that you can’t see but is lurking on the surface to make your finish weaker. Once it’s done all that, usually in the time it takes you to put the lid on the can (remembering to wipe the neck of it so it opens easily next time), a sanding agent in the sealer acts as a lubricant to make sanding it back as easy as possible!     • SolventsA solvent is the liquid added to a material to make it more viscose – thinner as it’s more commonly described. It’s important to use the correct solvent or thinner for the product you want to dilute. We have two solvents in our range, Cellulose Thinners for Cellulose Sanding Sealer and Melamine Lacquer, and Spirit Thinners for shellac based products and Spirit Stain.     • Toy Safe FinishesAll of these products have been tested to the EN71-3 regulations covering coatings for Toys and Nursery Furniture, which tests for the amount of the following elements in the finish as a dried film: Aluminium Antimony Arsenic Barium Boron Cadmium Chromium Cobalt Copper Lead Manganese Mercury Nickel Selenium Strontium Tin Zinc All of these products are well below the threshold in the regulations.
    • WaxesUsing a wax is one of the quickest and easiest ways of getting a good finish on your work. Turned pieces buff easily on the lathe and just a little bit of effort will soon achieve a pleasing glow on larger items. We use several different types of wax, from natural waxes such as beeswax and carnauba to manmade ones like paraffin wax and microcrystalline waxes. Each have their own particular properties, giving extra shine or durability, and blending them together can give the best of both worlds. If you’re seeking ‘easy to apply’ look no further than our WoodWax 22 If it’s hard-wearing you want then Microcrystalline Wax fits the bill. If you prefer a solid stick you’re spoilt for choice; pure carnauba, a beeswax/carnauba and a microcrystalline option can all be found here. And if you want your wax to be multi-purpose and smooth back whilst reducing the amount of dust created then it’s Cut’n’Polish for you. Waxes can also be used for decorative purposes too, from the traditional white of Liming Wax to the bright metallics of Gilt Cream.
